WINEMAKER PAR EXCELLENCE

John Loubser’s Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc, entry level, was on the front page of the New York Times on 27 July. Their top food writer had conducted a blind tasting amongst a highly esteemed group of wine masters. They were expecting a French wine or perhaps an Australian. Imagine their surprise when it was a South African wine? Steenberg’s Sauvignon Blanc. We are extremely proud of him and his very talented team!

Topping the list of achievers of the most awards given by The Wine-of-the-Month Club which has 40,000 members was Steenberg Vineyards’ John Loubser! Surprise, surprise this man really knows how to make a good bottle of wine! John took the title of Wine-of-the-Month Club Winemaker of the Year 2005 and received no less than 5 awards on the day.

Newest accolade is that in the next Platters Guide, 2005/6 the 156 wine masters that judge the thousands of wines made in South Africa, selected 72 superior wines which they thought worthy of 5 star status. These had to be further refined to 10 - that is the usual number of 5* wines acknowledged in Platter’s Guide each year.

Eleven merited selection for 5 stars this year and out of these two are John Loubser’s 2005 whites: Steenberg Sauvignon Blanc Reserve 2005 and Steenberg Semillon 2005. Watch this space.

THURSDAYS AT THE CIGAR BAR

For passionate people who enjoy life!

On the third Thursday of each month there is a get together at the Cigar Bar to affirm the enjoyment and delight of life. You will be introduced to a few of the range of Laurent-Perrier wines.
